There’s something to be said about silence. It is calming. It makes us hear things clearer. It makes us see God more.
But there are some people who do not like the quiet and silence. They cannot stand to be alone and just sit with no noise around them. I know people like this. They cannot just be. They constantly have to be moving and thinking and have noise around them.
There are several places in the Bible that mention quiet or stillness. I think we cannot truly see and hear God unless we are quiet sometimes. If this is hard for you, practice it. Find time during your day to just be – early in the morning when no one is around yet; at lunch go somewhere by yourself; in the evening before bed.
One of my favorite places to go is a cemetery. I know this sounds crazy to some people, but I really like the peacefulness in a grave yard. Sometimes I just drive through one of them. Sometimes I park my car and just sit looking. And sometimes I park and walk around. They are one of the most peaceful places to me.
I guess I know that will be the ultimate quiet one day when I am buried in that cemetery too. I hope my family will have peace about that when the time comes and will come to visit my grave as I do my daddy’s just to be still.
Learn how to be still and practice silence. It is good for our souls!
