As you know, if you’ve read this blog, I like music even though like Barney Fife, I cannot “sing a lick.” I do like some of the new songs played on Christian radio today, but none of them can compare to some of the old hymns I grew up hearing and singing.
It is inspiring to know the writers behind the hymns. One of the best writers of those hymns was Fanny Crosby. She was blind from birth, yet she lived a full life. She wrote over 8,000 songs. She was a teacher and missionary. She gave of herself and her money.
One of the songs she wrote that I like best is Blessed Assurance. Look at the words and notice how she uses words associated with seeing even though she was blind!
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
Perfect submission, perfect delight!
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
Perfect submission, all is at rest!
I in my Savior am happy and blessed,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
Chorus: This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long;
this is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.
Don’t we all need that blessed assurance today in this world as we try to live the best Christian life we can? That no matter what happens to us, God is there for us. Nothing can separate us from God.
