In 1985, the musical group Mister Mister released a song that most of us couldn’t pronounce much less knew the meaning of the title, Kyrie Eleison. It is Greek and means Lord, Have Mercy.
Many times the Psalmists asks God for mercy. In the New International Version of the Bible, it is said 11 times.
After David had sinned, first having an affair with Bathsheba and then killing her husband, he is told by Nathan, God’s prophet, just how much wrong he committed against God.
In Psalm 51 David said:
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.
I don’t know about you, but I know I need mercy every. single. day! Not only from God, but from others and myself.
Kyrie Eleison!
