Shofar

I had never heard the word shofar until a read a book a few years ago by Christian author Francine Rivers called And the Shofar Blew. It is a good book about a preacher who becomes too prideful and conceited and ends up making choices that ruin his life; a good lesson for us all.

A shofar, if you don’t know, is a ram’s horn that the Israelites blew at certain times like the year of Jubilee, other festivals, and when the walls of Jericho fell. You can see that they are large horns!

I cannot help but think if this is what will be blow at the end of time when Jesus returns for us. In the Bible 1 Thessalonians 4 verse 16 says For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. One preacher I heard once said he thought the shout we’ll all hear maybe would be the word ENOUGH! Yelled loud as if God has had enough of what is going on in this world. Maybe?

But the verse also says the sound of the trumpet of God. Maybe that is a shofar? It will blow to signal the end of time as we know it, but the beginning of so much more! I guess the big question is are we ready to hear it? Does it frighten us to know Jesus is coming soon? Will we be afraid of the shout and horn? If we answer yes to any of these, we need to get ourselves right with God ASAP!

There’s a great day coming!
