Just Gone

My great, great grandfather lived in Texas with his family back in the late 1800s. The story goes that one day he told his wife he was going away, and if he wasn’t back by a certain time, she was to take their two kids and herself to Tennessee. He left, never to be heard from again.

No one knows what happened to him. He was just gone.

In 2 Kings chapter 2, we read of Elijah being taken up to Heaven by a chariot of fire in a whirlwind. Elisha was the only witness to that wonderful event. What must it have been like to be taken or to watch him go?

Do you think people are taken by God today? Just gone, never to be heard from or seen again? I’ve often thought about it. Is that what happened to my ancestor? Is that what happens today to people who are gone without a trace?

I wonder why God chose that for Elijah and perhaps for others?

I don’t know the answers, but what a way to go!

  1. Such an intriguing bit of family history there! And just think, what seemed like a bad or sad thing with your great great grandfather’s disappearing actually led to your family’s having roots in Tennessee….a fact that surely impacted your parents’ meeting, your own birth and eventual marriage to Chris…..the list goes on and shows just how God works out one event (your ancestor’s abandonment (?) of his family) to bring untold blessed events to the descendants! It’s certainly a story to ponder from many angles.
