Who Am I?

Our minister has been preaching a sermon series on Identity. Who am I? How do I get my identity?

At a recent job interview, one of the questions I was asked was, “What are three things the students you taught would say to describe you?”

I answered off the cuff so to speak. But later when I thought about it more, I wondered what would they really say I am?

Who am I? Really? How do people see me? How am I identified?

There is a lot of talk today about how do you identify? Are you a he, she, her, him, it?

But what makes our identity? Is it our sexuality, our jobs, our family, our present, our past, how we look?

I don’t want my past to identify me. I want to learn from it, but I don’t want people to remember it. People tend to remember the bad things you’ve done more than the good.

One thing that our preacher kept saying was “I’m not who I was.” I love this! Not only am I not who I was before I was baptized into Christ and He washed away my sins, but I am not who I was yesterday. God forgives me daily of my many sins.

Paul, in 1 Corinthians 6, lists a lot of sins, but then in verse 11, he says:

And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

He says we were all sinners but have been washed, sanctified and justified by Christ. We’re not who we were!

Praise God that I’m not who I was!
