Are you scared yet?

“If you’re not scared, you’re not paying attention.”

Think about this for a minute. Are you scared? How scared are you? If you aren’t scared, why not? Are we looking inside ourselves enough to be scared? Are we looking at ourselves too much? Are we not looking at ourselves enough?

Yesterday, I had an interesting conversation with a counselor. I wasn’t there as her client. She is family and my friend. We talked about a lot of things, and she has some great ideas for the future. But one thing she said has stuck with me. She talked about generational differences, from our parents to our generation to our kids.

It seems our parents generation didn’t do as much self-evaluation as we do, and we don’t do as much as our kids are doing. I know not everyone can fall into this category, but for the most part I agree. Maybe you don’t agree and that’s okay.

There is a healthy way to be able to see yourself and to know you’re doing okay and you’re where you should be. But there are also those who never evaluate themselves. They never see areas they need to improve or how they are treating others. There are those who walk around as if they are the only ones in the world, never looking out for the other person. On the other hand, there are those who think so badly about themselves that they have a hard time functioning.

We have to find a healthy balance. Solomon in the book of Ecclesiastes said there is a time a place for everything. There is a time to seek help, and there is a time to know you’re okay. We should always be selfless and looking for others to help and serve.

There’s nothing wrong with needing help. Get help. Get counseling if you need it. It helps to bounce things off someone who is non judgmental and isn’t biased.

If you’re scared, find out why? If you’re not, find out why. Ask some questions about yourself. Look inside. It’s not always easy, but I do believe it’s always good to do.
