Cakewalk

There are many euphemisms used in the English language when we speak. Many we say and never know where they actually come from or who said them first.

Yesterday listening to the sermon at worship, our minister used ‘cakewalk’ which put my mind to wondering where in the world that term originated. I always thought of the game at a carnival where people walk around in a circle and where you land is the cake you win.

But I never knew!

I Googled it, of course, and came up with the answer. Did you know cakewalk was a dance generally done by slaves on plantations? At the end of the performance, the winners were given an enormous cake.

I think if people knew this term came from slaves, there would be riots!

Personally, I love the history behind it. More about slaves in tomorrow’s blog!
