Confrontation

I could never be a lawyer. I have strong beliefs and opinions, but that isn’t why. It’s not the speaking in public. Or the standing before a judge. It’s not even the possibility of defending an innocent person. There are ways around having to do that by being a certain type of lawyer.

It’s the confrontation. I really hate confrontation.

I don’t understand how and why some people seem to thrive on it.

Jesus said in Matthew 5, “Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called Sons of God.”

I guess you could argue in a way lawyers are peacemakers. But I don’t think so.

I think some people who like to argue don’t understand how hard it is for those of us who do not. The way it makes my tummy ache, my body sweat, my mouth go dry.

I don’t even like to be a witness to it. I even heard someone once say after an argument, “They’re mad at me and I don’t care.” How can you not care that someone is angry with you? How does that not eat away at you?

We all need to think about our words more. I know I do.

As the New Year approaches with its resolutions, perhaps this should be one for us all.

Or perhaps it should be just keeping our mouths shut!
