Hard Love

It’s hard isn’t it? To love?

Oh, we throw the word around like it’s confetti. We say it without even thinking. But do we really and truly mean it?

Sometimes it’s hard to love others. Kids, spouse, parents, friends, or coworkers.

But one of the hardest to love is ourselves, especially when we mess up. It’s hard to love when we do something and have to suffer the consequences. Or maybe it’s having to love the way we look or just the way we are.

I love the song Hard Love by Needtobreathe. Listen to the lyrics. “Nobody is going to change the standard. It’s not enough to just feel the flame. You have to burn your old self away. Hold on tight a little longer. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Get back up. It’s a hard love.”

It is a hard love. We just have to keep on trying. Get back up every day and often a few times a day!

I think about God’s love for all humanity. It has to be a hard love. He sent Jesus, His Son, to die for us when so often, we are so unlovable as nations and individuals.

Thanks be to God that He can do hard love!
