Decision

The other night I told Chris I had made a decision. When I say this to him, he always gets a scared look on his face and says something like ‘Uh oh!’

I have decided I’m not going to get old.

After spending these past couple of weeks with my mom, that is my decision. She will 90 on July 3rd! 90! It has been hard to watch her struggle after her knee replacement, though she is doing very well.

They say age is just a number, and I suppose it is. But as that number gets bigger, things become harder.

I think Solomon got this. He was the wisest man to ever live, and it must have been difficult to know so much. He touches on how hard it is in Ecclesiastes. He repeats the phrase ‘chasing after the wind’ so many times.

Life can feel like that. Life is like that. Perhaps when we get old, that is what many feel like their lives have been. We can never catch the wind. We can’t even see it.

So, what is life all about? Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 2:

There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God, 25 for apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment?

The wisest man said to eat, drink, and find joy in your job.

But the most important thing he said was that we cannot find joy in this life apart from God.
