Rocks

Ever wonder why rocks are mentioned a lot in the Bible? Rocks are hard, cold, misshapen things, but they are useful in so many ways.

In Exodus 33 Moses wanted to see God’s glory. God tells Moses if he saw Him, he would die. But God granted his request somewhat. He told Moses to stand on the rock, and He would put Moses in the cleft of the rock, put His hand over Moses, and pass over him. Moses would then get a glimpse of God’s back. There’s an old hymn called Cleft of the Rock that says “He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock.”

One of my favorite songs we sing in worship is Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. One of the lines in it says “Here I raise my Ebenezer.” Now, I’ll admit I thought ‘What is an Ebenezer?’ when I first heard this line. So, I looked it up. Ebenezer means stone of help! Samuel took a stone and built an altar to God and called it Ebenezer because God had helped them at that place (Samuel 7).

How many times has God helped you and me? Have you ever really stopped and looked back at your day, week, year, life? Have you seen God’s hand where maybe you didn’t at the time, but looking back you can see it now? I know I can and in so many situations where I didn’t see Him then.

We need to stand on The Rock like Moses and raise our Ebenezer like Samuel. We need to remember that God will hide us in the cleft of the rock and will cover us there with His hand. We may not feel it at the time, but remember “Wait for the Lord; be strong and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” (Psalm 27:14)

Praise be the to “Rock of our salvation!” (Psalm 95:1)
